Military Veterans Wellness Program
BCACP is proud to endorse the Military Veterans Wellness Program, a collaborative initiative developed to strengthen the way police identify, engage with and support military veterans in their communities.
The Military Veterans Wellness Program was developed by the Toronto Police Service in partnership with the Department of National Defence, Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans Affairs Canada, Royal Canadian Legion, and the Operational Stress Injury Social Support program.
The program equips frontline officers with greater awareness and training to recognize and better understand issues affecting military Veterans, build rapport, and provide a formal pathway to connect Veterans with essential social services and supports.
Why It Matters
Military Veterans experiencing financial instability, limited social supports or health concerns can face significant challenges, including homelessness and suicidal ideation.
The MVWP provides police with a practical way to move beyond the immediate interaction and help connect a Veteran with organizations equipped to provide ongoing assistance.
Our Endorsement
The Military Veterans Wellness Program was introduced to BCACP members at the February 2026 Leadership Conference, where its practical approach to supporting both frontline officers and military Veterans resonated strongly with our membership. Following that presentation, BCACP formally endorsed the program in May 2026, recognizing its value in strengthening frontline response, supporting officer awareness and building meaningful connections with community partners.
The Vancouver Police Department has also adopted and advanced the program locally, bringing this model into practice in British Columbia and demonstrating the value of collaboration and shared learning across jurisdictions.
With its focus on awareness, connection and practical pathways to support, BCACP encourages police agencies across British Columbia and Canada to consider how the Military Veterans Wellness Program could benefit the Veterans and communities they serve.
