Day 1 – Is Seeing Believing? How Deep Fakes Affect Open Source Intelligence 

Do you think seeing is believing?  In recent years, artificially created media known as “deep fakes” have been increasingly used to distribute “fake news”, manipulate public opinions, and commit criminal offences.

This presentation examines key differences between misinformation and disinformation, the evolution of deep fakes, and the impact their use has on communities around the world. Participants will also hear about the impact deep fakes have on open source intelligence work and learn best practices to verify the authenticity of online information.

Kailey Skemp began her career in law enforcement with the Organized Crime Agency of BC with Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit-BC (CFSEU-BC) in 2018, and completed a degree in Criminology in 2021.

Kailey has worked with the CFSEU-BC Open Source Section as an Open Source Analyst since 2023, where she provides open source intelligence information on individuals associated to the BC Gang Conflict and Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs to law enforcement agencies across Canada, and internationally. Kailey has previously worked with the Crime Guns Intelligence and Investigation Group as an Open Source Analyst, and the Joint Illegal Gaming Investigation Team, the Anti-Trafficking Task Force, and the Covert Asset Support Team, as an Investigative Assistant.

Kailey has delivered presentations to various local investigational units and international police forces on how to be aware of online safety, and youth and gang social trends.
